I always wonder why it is called “Common” when such a meal is not common at all…It’s awesome!
According to the objective of this house which encourages students to promote better understanding between countries and cultures, Common Meal is one of various activities in this house that students are able to spend “common time” together in the “common place”.
To begin with, each resident has to prepare his or her menu (normally one night before the event). As we have more than 25 students from more than 15 different countries, some menus are unique traditional food which you cannot find somewhere else. Some are from one’s interest that he or she wants to share with friends (e.g., one of my Japanese friends tried to cook “Scone”, the British cake made of wheat, barley or oatmeal, with baking powder and then baked on sheet pans. Therefore, this event can ensure that we will experience delicious cuisine around the globe.
What’s more, this event is not only for the residents, but we can also invite our friends to join. In my view, joining such an event helps me gain both friends, good will amongst students and enjoy amazing meal at the same time.
Such noteworthy experiences will be a vital contributing factor to help me fulfil my life in Kyoto and I’m looking forward to my turn to show the cuisine of my country in the near future.
